Simplicity at its Best

Woohoo! Finally after 11 weeks of hard work- the term holiday is here but today is already Wednesday- mid week and before we know it, it is back to work again. Boo Boo!

But I don't detest my work even since I started work like in 2006 (a good 7 years) but this year has been hectic even with the 2/3 load; which makes me feel the manner I am working is too reactive. It doesn't allow me to slow down and consider if there are other better and more effective ways to work around. So much for reading my 4 hours work week. And this creates a lot of stress in my life because your judgement is impairs by the need to get things done fast.

So I decided to google " Simplify my life". What can I do to simplify my life so that I can have a personal satisfying life. And I can across this and like it so much

We want simplicity, peace, contentment and joy. But instead:
We own too much. We do too much. We buy too much.
We’re out of shape. We’re in debt. We’re wasteful.

And most importantly:
You need to learn these things so you will have time and space for the things that light you up, for the people you love, the passions you hold.

And because to have time and space, not forgetting financially able.

4 hours work week FAILED

tried 4 hours work week but failed totally- i'm spending 11 and half hours work daily! and totally exhausted when i'm back home and all these at the expenses of my family life

I realised I need to train my mind to compartmentalize priorities because when something is bothering me (eg: incidents that cannot be solved or incidents that upsets me), i am not able to focus on other things and it impairs my ability to work and slows down everything. And i do get upset very easily :(

Now is the psychological battle with myself.

4 hours work week by Tim Ferriss (Step 2)

Still on this book but now to Step 2 which is E: Elimination (my favorite chapter in the book)

E: Elimination is about time management, or rather about not managing time. This is achieved by applying the 'Pareto principle' or '80-20 Rule' (80% of your benefits come from 20% of your efforts) to focus only on those tasks that contribute the majority of benefit, and using Parkinson's law(work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion) to limit the amount of actual time spent working. There's a difference, Ferriss says, between efficiency and effectiveness. The book's emphasis is on effectiveness.

As an employee, always be able to increase your value and make it painful for the company to fire you than to grant raises and a remote working arrangement (or negotiate for a working environment you have control over)

Favorite lines:
Effectiveness is doing the things that get you closer to your goals. Efficiency is performing a given task (whether important or not) in the most economical manner possible.

I want to effective more than efficient.
What you do is infinitely more important than how you do it. Efficiency is still important, but it is useless unless applied to the right things.

Being selective—doing less—is the path of the productive. Focus on the important few and ignore the rest.

Lack of time is actually lack of priorities.

What am I going to do from now on?

1. Limit tasks to the important to shorten work time (80/20).
2. Shorten work time to limit tasks to the important (Parkinson's Law).

The best solution is to use both together: Identify the few critical tasks that contribute most to income and schedule them with very short and clear deadlines.

Don't ever arrive at the office or in front of your computer without a clear list of priorities.
You'll just read unassociated e-mail and scramble your brain for the day. Compile your to-do list for tomorrow no later than this evening.

You should have, at most, two primary goals or tasks per day. Do them separately from start to finish without distraction.

Next Interrupting Interruption and the Art of Refusal
Learn to be difficult when it counts. In school as in life, having a reputation for being assertive will help you receive preferential treatment without having to beg or fight for it every time.

Doing the important and ignoring the trivial is hard because so much of the world seems to conspire to force crap upon you

What am I going to do?
1. resolve to keep those around you focused and avoid all meetings, whether in person or remote, that do not have clear objectives. (Im guilty of beating around the bush with no clear objectives)

It is possible to do this tactfully, but expect that some time wasters will be offended the first few times their advances are rejected. Once it is clear that remaining on task is your policy and not subject to change, they will accept it and move on with life. Hard feelings pass. Don't suffer fools or you'll become one.
It is your job to train those around you to be effective and efficient.

Get into the habit of considering what "if. . . then" actions can be proposed in any e-mail where you ask a question. (Get the hang of it) examples given in the book
"Can you meet at 4:00 P.M.? If SO __If not, please advise three other times that work for you."

Meetings should only be held to make decisions about a pre- defined situation, not to define the problem.
Go in with a clear set of objectives and set an end time or leave early.

2. Batch activities to limit setup and provide more time for other milestones
I love routines! It gives me a sense of security and allows me to be in control but this year, lots of things have been reactive and everyday at work, it is like fighting fire.

It says "What can I routinize by batching? That is, what tasks (whether laundry, groceries, mail, payments, or sales reporting, for example) can I allot to a specific time each day, week, month, quarter, or year so that I don't squander time repeating them more often than is absolutely necessary?"
Going to list down activities that are repeated

3. Say No!
Don't make up elaborate lies or you'll get called on them. A simple answer such as, "I really can't—sorry; I've got too much on my plate right now" will do as a catch-all response.

4 hours work week by Tim Ferriss

Recommended by Mack and Angel (which is one of the most uplifting website I have come across)
Realised that there are a few ideas that I could make use and decided to pen it down so that it becomes a constant reminder to myself

There are a few lines I just love reading over and over again:
Sharpening your logical and practical mental toolbox-it is being smart and putting your effort where it can make the biggest difference for yourself and other.

2. D.E.A.L (Deal Making in your life)

D: Definition

E: Elimination

A: Automation

L: Liberation

3. Definition:
to figure out what a person wants, get over fears, see past society's "expectations", and figure out what it will really cost to get where a person wants to go.

My definition:
To prevent work for work's sake and to do the minimum necessary for maximum effect (minimum effective load)
With my current 2/3 work load arrangement and yet taking on more roles in school, time is really tight and sometimes, I end up with very little time and energy when I'm back home. And with all the effort put in, I don't see the results coming in (both at home and work)

To make a ton of money with specific reasons and defined dreams to chase, timelines and steps included. What are you working for?
Xin and I have been discussing with the need for passive income; money will not solve all problems but we won't like the day when money becomes an issue for us.

Am I contributing anything useful to this world?
Have been asking what am I am working for

Reminder:
  • What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do.
  • Focus on being productive instead of busy
  • If it's important to you and you want to do it "eventually," just do it and correct course along the way.
  • If the potential damage is moderate or in any way reversible, don't give people the chance to say no.

Question to myself:
Endure a non-ideal existence to let circumstance or others decide life for you, or to amass a fortune while passing through life like a spectator from an office window.

What will I sacrifice if I continue on this track for 5,10 or 20 years?

To do:
Measure the cost of inaction, realize the unlikelihood and re- pairability of most missteps, and develop the most important habit of those who excel and enjoy doing so: action.

Finally resolution time in Feb 2013

Today is the last day of the month of Feb 2013 and finally gotten the time to pen down my resolutions for the year (maybe I will review it in June) .

It has been a crazy start and more things are piling up and I feel as though I'm trapping water- just to keep myself abreast everyday. (But im still not cutting out my timewasters-eg: facebooking, forum reading, blog reading- KPOing on other people's life).

I hope to take this opportunity to re-look on my priorities for 2013; reason being I don't want the days to pass me by and come 2014,i realise i'm starting all over again.

Baby Sophie at 9 months

In another 2 days, my Sophie will be 9 months! Unbelievable at the rate she is growing- so fast now she has 3 visible pearlies appearing- 2 on top; one below and one molar at the back( not visible). Soon she can chomp down lots of food already.

My favorite picture at the moment! I hope she will remain this happy as long as possible

Whirlwind month!

Unbelievable but we survived 1 month and 1 week without our domestic helper. Although the house is not as clean as she was around, I'm not able to fully spend all my attention to my Sophie baby but I guess we are doing quite fine. The next crunch period will come in when I start work again. I shudder to that thought.

The plus points of not having the domestic helper is yeah! No need to tolerate her attitude and yeah!i have Sophie all to myself and the bonus is xin is so much more proactive and he is so much on hands on with Sophie! He has become more appreciative of me :) yeah!

Today our cleaning company just relax came in for the first time. Not as squeaky clean but at least I get to have my lunch at 1pm and my parents get to play with sophie instead of doing housework when they are here.

My Sophie has strayed from the routine because of the plenty disruption in the week. So we got to be more disciplined and mummy and Sophie will be grounded for the week!

Our dearest baby!

Hopefully Sophie gets on track soon before I go back to work.
